NUCLEAR POWER PLANT / New York, New York

CHALLENGE

What do you do when you acquire a nuclear power plant and have only 6 months to complete ownership transition? The pressure to “go live” under normal circumstances is huge; doing it in highly regulated, secure environments is enormous. In this case, the due diligence process highlighted the incompatibility between buyer / seller document management systems and verified that the seller’s system would be costlier and more complex to maintain than migrating all documents to a single and simplified standard. Converting and upgrading the seller’s document management system became a key deliverable in the transition phase since the new owner wanted a standardized document management system for all its nuclear plants.

ACTION

DMI was already the approved document management vendor for the new owner, having implemented a new company standard across multiple locations. DMI was asked to participate in the transition plan by leading the document management system migration to the less costly eChange (Motiva) product. The migration started with an analysis of the seller’s current drawing life-cycle and change management process. DMI developed a strategy to transition the legacy system to eChange, with major milestones driving the critical path to a “go live” date. Six months of careful planning and preparation were required to ensure a seamless migration.

RESULTS

Over a weekend, DMI moved a major nuclear power plant from operating with a Metaphase document management system to a state-of-the-art eChange (Motiva) solution. On the following Monday morning, over 200 designers, engineers, records management and general personnel were using the new system without any problems, from both local and remote locations. The power plant owner was able to reduce the number full-time equivalent IT workers by two, yielding an 18 month simple payback of the direct conversion cost based on productivity improvements. This success leads DMI to repeat the process for two additional nuclear power plants in the owner’s Northeastern power generation fleet.
